The Song of Songs of Solomon: Divine Romance or Sex in the Bible?
A Sensual Poem?
The book of the Song of Songs of king Solomon is one of the most unique books in the bible. It's considered a sensual poem that speaks about sex. Some believe that the book is actually a text dealing with sex that is found in the word of God, because it is a book that deals with life. But, is that the case? I don't believe so. If we take a closer look at the messages of the book and apply a little common sense, we will see that the dialogue, if it took place between a couple, doesn't even make much sense. A boyfriend, girlfriend, or married couple would not use the strange words and expressions that we see are used in the dialogue between the husband and wife in The Song of Songs of Solomon.
Divine Romance
Watchman Nee, a native of China, was a great teacher of the Holy Scriptures. He was full of wisdom and understanding of the Bible. He shared his messages on the meaning of The Song of Songs of Solomon many years ago. They were preserved, and eventually were reprinted. The preface to the edition in Chinese says, "We thank God, because on Earth there are people who are drawn by the Lord to follow him. This book has been especially prepared for them. The spiritual communion that takes place in the secret chamber is sacred that it must be sealed. But, God has chosen to reveal it to us in The Song of Songs of Solomon in such a way that we can understand the path of love and through it be encouraged to press onward." This quotation appears in the book, The Song of Songs of Solomon: Divine Romance Between God and Man, by Watchman Nee. (Note: The quotation here is a translation of the version translated to Spanish).
Watchman Nee's teaching on divine romance is excellent. We see, for example, how he explains the second verse of the book of The Song of Songs that say, "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine." Watchman's teachings explain that, "The kisses that are alluded to here are not like the kiss from the Father on the neck (Luke 15:20). That kiss was a sign of forgiveness, which all who belong to the Lord have received. The emphasis in Song of Songs is on the loving relationship between believers and the Lord. Therefore, forgiveness is an implicit fact.... No one can kiss two people at the same time. A kiss is the expression of an exclusively personal relationship. She is no longer satisfied with a general relationship; and she desires a personal relationship that no one else has. Spiritual edification can never be separated from a search that is based on hunger and thirst. If the Holy Spirit has not created in the believer a true dissatisfaction with a general relationship nor a mind to search for a personal affection, the believer will not be able to have an intimate relationship with the Lord." We highly recommend that every believer who longs for an intimate relationship with Jesus to read Song of Songs: Divine Romance between God and Man, by Watchman Nee. The content of the book is perfectly described on the back cover. We read, "Watchman Nee explains the poetic allegory that king Solomon MAKES on the love of God. He deals with the stages of the believer's revelation with Christ and reveals the spiritual story of every believer. The story goes from the initial quest for Christ and the satisfaction that we find en Him to the growing desire to be liberated from self and from the flesh to genuinely experience the cross. In this liberation comes a beautiful and close communion of divine romance...." (Note: The quotation here is a translation of the version translated to Spanish).
It's interesting to note that when the Bible refers to sex, it never speaks openly, but rather is uses euphemisms such as, "And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain...." (Gen. 4:1). It doesn't even say anything as direct as "Adam slept with his wife." If we consider the delicate and evasive language that's used in the rest of the Bible to speak about sex, why would we say that Song of Songs, unlike all of the rest of the Bible, speaks openly about sex? That doesn't make sense. There is a difference between sex and romance. Song of Songs revolves around divine romance just like brother Nee explains, someone who had a deep understanding of the scriptures.
