Epilepsy in the Bible: Is There an Epilepsy and Demonic Possession Connection?

Evidence of Epilepsy in the Bible
In the scripture of Mark 9:17-21 we read, "And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb (evil)spirit. And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him, and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away. And I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. He (Jesus) answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him unto me. And they brought him unto him. And when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground and wallowed foaming. And he (Jesus) asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child."
There are many good reasons for associating the above scripture with an example of epilepsy in the Bible. We learn that the afflicted individual falls to the ground, becomes rigid, thrashes about, foams at the mouth and chews. All of these facts are revealed in the passage. These are the very same signs that are seen when an epileptic has seizures or what is called tonic clonic convulsions, formerly known as grand mal convulsions. Therefore, it is perfectly logical to declare that the passage of Mark 9:17-21 is sure evidence of epilepsy in the Bible.
Epilepsy and Demonic Possession
Because Mark 9:17-21 speaks of demonic possession in connection with the description of convulsions, we know that epilepsy in the Bible reveals some truths that are never accepted by doctors. Epileptic seizures can result from physical injury, taking medications, high fevers, and the use of illegal drugs. Convulsions can also occur and recur for no apparent reason--at least no apparent medical reason. Sometimes there is a spiritual reason for both mental and physical sickness and abnormalities. This truth is plainly revealed in the careful reading and study of the word of God on mental and physical sickness and disease.
The father in our biblical example of epilepsy in the Bible did not give up hope for his son's
healing. He could find no help in the doctors of those days. He did not receive help at first when he turned to men of God, but he would not stop. He sought Jesus and witnessed the complete liberation from the evil spirit who was behind epileptic seizures suffered by his son (Mark 9:22-27). Yes, sometimes there is a connection between epilepsy and
demonic possession according the scriptures that reveal epilepsy in the Bible.
