Who Are the Seven Spirits of God?

dove.jpg

Often we hear that there are evil, neutral and holy spirits. While there are evil spirits, there are no neutral ones, nor is there more than one holy spirit. It's important to understand this, because practitioners of "white" magic claim to be in touch with "good" and "holy" spirits of light. They even try to support this lie with scripture from the bible such as the one that mentions the seven spirits of God. Let's get the truth of the matter.

Christians believe the truth that God is in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But, if there is only one Holy Spirit, who are the seven Spirits of God before the throne about whom we read in the book of Revelation?

The Revelations of the Book of Revelations

"John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne" (Gideons Intl. Bible, Revelation 1:4). We learn that the seven spirits of God are before the Lord's throne and that they send peace and grace to the churches.

"And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write: These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God..." (Rev. 3:1). These are the words of Jesus which explain to us that he, Christ, has the seven Spirits.

"And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God" (Rev. 4:5). This scripture reveals to us that the seven spirits are burning lamps.

"And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth" (Rev. 5:6). We learn that these seven Spirits in Revelation are not only lamps of fire, and send peace to the church, but that they also are the eyes of Jesus. They also are sent out into all of the earth.

Let's review what we've learned. The seven Spirits:

1. Are before the throne of God (Rev. 1:4).

2. Send peace to the churches (Rev. 1:4).

3. Are of Jesus (Rev. 3:1).

4. Are lamps of fire (Rev. 4:5).

5. Are the eyes of the Lamb of God (Jesus) (Rev. 5:6).

6. Are sent into all of the earth (Rev. 5:6).

This information lets us identify who the Spirits are.

Before the Throne

Jesus said, "But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne" (Mat. 5:34). There are several more scriptures that tell us that heaven is the throne of God. We read, "...by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven..." (1 Pet. 1:12). The Holy Spirit, also known as the Spirit of God, and simply, the Spirit, is from the throne of God. And, the seven Spirits of God are from the throne of God (Rev. 1:4). We're learning that the seven Spirits in Revelation have the exact same characteristics that the Holy Spirit has. This is the revelation of who they are--the Holy Spirit, one of the three persons of the Holy Trinity. At the end of this article, we learn why the one Spirit is being referred to as seven Spirits.

Peace to the Church

The seven Spirits send peace to the church (Rev. 1:4). Take notice that the Holy Spirit is the peace of the church, in other words, he is the peace of the saints. We read:

"...The unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3).

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace..." (Galatians 5:22).

"But, the COMFORTER (comfort brings peace), which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name..." (St. John 14:26).

Again, we see that the work of the seven Spirits is the exact same work as that of the Holy Spirit of God, which is exactly what identifies them as the Spirit of God.

The Spirits Are from Jesus

The seven Spirits before the throne are from Jesus (Rev. 3:1). This means that they are the spirits of Christ. The scripture of Romans 8:9 teaches us that only by the Holy Spirit of God can we have the Spirit of Christ. We read, "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." It should be clear that the seven Spirits of God mentioned in Revelation are the Holy Spirit of God.

Lamps of Fire

The seven Spirits are lamps of fire (Rev. 4:6). John the Baptist taught that the Lord Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit and with FIRE. He said, "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. But, he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear. He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and FIRE: whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner. But, he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable FIRE" (Mat. 3:11-12).

The seven Spirits of God in Revelation are God, because they are the Spirit of Christ; and Jesus is God. And, Christians know that, "...Our God is a consuming FIRE" (Heb. 12:29).

Eyes of the Lamb

We learned that the seven Spirits before the throne of the Lord are the eyes of the Lamb (Jesus). Do we remember what is written about the eyes of Christ in Revelation 1:14? This scripture says, "His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow. And, his EYES were as a flame of FIRE."

The Bible says that, "The light of the body is the eye..." (Mat. 6:22). And, it says that the spirit of man is the candle of the Lord (Prov. 20:27). This means that the eyes of man are the spirit of man. Likewise, the eyes of the Lord are the Spirit of the Lord. It's argued that these verses speak of man and not of God. But, we must remember that the Lord said, "...Let us make man in OUR IMAGE, after OUR LIKENESS..." (Gen. 1:26). Therefore, just as the eyes of man are the spirit of man, the eyes of God are the Spirit of God. And, God the Son, is a fire just like the seven Spirits of God are a fire.

Sent into All of the Earth

We read that the seven Spirits are sent into all of the earth (Rev. 5:6). Notice what the following scriptures say, which reveal that the Holy Spirit is sent into all of the earth:

"And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else. And, my people shall never be ashamed. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh...." (Joel 2:27-28). Flesh is in all parts of the earth. God poured out, or sent his Spirit, into all the earth when he poured his Spirit out.

Jesus said, "...Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you. And, ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

The seven spirits before the throne of God revealed in the book of Revelation have all of the characteristics and attributes of the Holy Ghost. They do the work of the Holy Spirit. They perfectly fit the description of the Spirit of God--because they are the Spirit of the God.

The Number Seven

But, why is the Holy Spirit called the seven Spirits before the throne of God only in Revelation? Remember that Revelation is true to its name--revelations. It is a book of spiritual REVELATIONS. The Lord allows us to begin to have a glimpse into what heaven, his throne, is like. We are taught a little about how the Holy Ghost appears before the throne of God. We learn that he looks like seven lamps of fire and that he also looks like, and are, the eyes of the Lamb of God, whose eyes are like flames of fire. He might have other forms in heaven as well, but we don't know that. We only know what the Lord chose to let us know, which are these things that he revealed to us in the book of Revelations.

The scriptures also reveal that the number seven is special to the Lord. It appears to represent fullness and perfection to God. This is why it makes sense to believe that the Bible uses the words "seven Spirits" to signify the perfect work of the Holy Spirit of God.
