Out of the Mouth of Babes: Can Children Have Faith in God?
Teach Christian Children of Faith!
Christian book stores across the United States sell Bibles for Christian children who serve God to teach them what the Lord has said, on a level they can understand. But, can children have faith in God? They most certainly can--and do! Such stores also sell praise music for even very young followers of Jesus, again, to guide them into worship of God. Of course, this is a good thing as parents are commanded to teach their children God's word (Deut. 4:10). However, considering the numerous adults who are unsure about how to develop the kind of relationship with God that saints in the Bible enjoyed; its conceivable that they're even more uncertain on how to lead a child into relating to him.
Understandably, one figures that a child, who is typically concerned with mischief and fun, is simply incapable of being interested in the things of God, but there are truly Christian children of faith in the world. It's also assumed that even if interest is sparked, the child's intellect is not ready for spiritual matters. But, is this reasoning in agreement with the Bible on the question of whether children can have faith in God?
The Old and New Testaments exemplify God's call on the lives of very young children who actively entered Christian ministry long before reaching adulthood. These Christian kids of faith prophesied, perfected worship, served in the temple, and occupied government offices.
Samuel was a child when he was taken to the temple to learn to minister before the Lord. It is seen in scripture that God called him by name, but not yet knowing the Lord for himself, he did not understand who was speaking. The Bible shows that Eli, when he came to understand that God was calling Samuel, explained to the boy how to respond, and thus, begin his relationship with the Lord. How many of today's Christian kids of faith have received this kind of guidance from adult believers? It's written that, "Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him. And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child. Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down, and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth" (Jeremiah 1.4-7). This is the calling of a child to national spiritual leadership.
Christians are also reminded that Jeremiah said, "The word of the Lord came unto me saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a child. But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child, for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak." This is the biblical account of the calling of a child to the ministry of prophecy. Christian kids of faith in today's world are among the servants God has called to do his will in the Earth.
In the scripture of II Chronicles 34:1, it is recorded that, "Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years. And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left. For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was young, he began to seek after the God of David his father." Further reading in this passage reveals that the teenaged king Josiah purged Israel of the contamination of idols. This is yet another biblical example of God's use of a child, a teenager who ruled a country under divine guidance.
New Testament scripture also illustrates the awesomeness and ease with which the Lord can and does relate to his servants of any age, including Christian kids of faith. It's written of John the Baptist that, "He shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb" (Luke 1:15). Could this unborn child perceive the moment God's Spirit took up residence in him? Again, scripture answers the question as the reader is informed that this fetus literally leaped with joy in his mother's womb (KJV, Luke 2.44). Can children have faith in God? The answer is obvious--yes.
Finally, kids are not only seen in scripture living out faith in God, but also conducting a perfect worship to God. In Matthew 21:15-16 Jesus asked the adults, "Have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?"
Christian adults who have the privilege of influencing a child, also have the obligation to teach that child about his Creator. There should not be any fear or doubt regarding getting through to him with the gospel, but rather, focus should be on the avoidance of placing limits on God's work. God bless the young followers of Jesus.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
