Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Some of the best movies ever made are unknown and / or are considered worthless simply because they're old...very old. Such is the case with Babes in Toyland, also known as March of the Wooden Soldiers (1934), starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, two of the finest comedians of all time. And their performance--as well as that of all the rest of the cast--is absolutely brilliant.
March of the Wooden Soldiers opens in toyland where the fictional characters of the most famous fairy tales of Western culture come to life. The plot then begins to unfold. Stanie Dum (Stan Laurel) and Ollie Dee (Oliver Hardy) rent a room in Mother Peep's shoe, and they're employed as toy makers. What could go wrong when you have a nice place to stay, a job, and you live in Toyland? Plenty.
Their landlady, Mother Peep, is behind with the mortgage on the shoe...owned by the evil Silas Barnaby. Stanie Dum and Ollie Dee are happy to help her out financially. The only problem? They've just been fired from the toy factory for royally messing up an order to make 600 soldiers that stand one foot high. How did they mess this up? Well, they made one hundred soldiers six feet high.
Meanwhile, they also want to help out Little Bo Beep, who keeps losing her sheep. She's in trouble too, because the evil Barnaby wants to make her his wife...in exchange for writing off the debt on the shoe. Not only is Barnaby an evil, old and ugly villain she doesn't want to marry, Tom Tom is the man she wants to be her husband. Bumbling Stanie Dum and Ollie Dee give their all to help them both. However, things don't go very well to say the least. In fact, they end up being punished by Toyland's fat king. Worse yet is Tom Tom and Little Bo Peep find themselves in the hottest of waters when the innocent Tom Tom is accused of killing one of the Three Little Pigs. He's banished to bogeyland where bogeymen live.
March of the Wooden Soldiers (Babes in Toyland) is a masterpiece, and is one of the best comedies of the 1930s. It's perfect for children and adults alike. And what we find brilliant is the gentle, but effective, way in which the movie deals with the battle between good and evil that even little children can understand. Very positive messages are put forth in March of the Wooden Soldiers (Babes in Toyland), including the message to persevere when things are at their worst. We see the Three Little Pigs, as well as some other little creature we can't identify, fighting with all their strength in the battle that culminates at the end. Toyland is being invaded by the bogeymen who have somehow escaped from bogeyland. Even the king is helpless to stop them. But Toylanders are not giving up. However, it still looks hopeless. They're simply no match for the bogeymen. But their tenacity, their fight and will power will lead them to victory. These powerful things open the eyes of Stanie Dum and Ollie Dee to see their answer in the midst of the war they are losing. An answer they never thought would be an answer to any problem.
Babes in Toyland is a cinematic delight. Not only can the actors truly act, they can also sing. Their beautiful voices sing a significant part of the movie. And even audiences who are not lovers of musicals will love the scenes of beautiful song in Babes in Toyland.
