The Shack by WM Paul Young: Does It Contain Anti-Christian Messages?
On the back cover of the book, The Shack, by WM. Paul Young, we read:
"The Shack tackles the age-old question of: Where is God in a world full of indescribable misery? The answers that Mack receives will surprise you."
"Finally, a novel about a man's encounter with God....!"
In a world where the definition of God is becoming more and more flexible and subjective, those who are genuinely seeking truth will compare everything, though it might sound Christian, with the word of God to be sure that it is in agreement with it. This is precisely what we did when writing this review of The Shack, by WM. Paul Young.
Examining the Messages of The Shack by WM. Paul Young
The references and the excerpts from the book (for this review) are taken from pages 78 through 96.
On page 78 (of the version in Spanish), readers learn that, "God, the Father" is a large Black woman, called Eloise. Yes, "he" is a woman. But, the scriptures clearly tell us that God is a he. Genesis 2:7 says that the Lord formed man. It does not say that the lady formed man. Genesis 18:1-2 tells us that the Lord appeared in the form of three men. It does not say that he appeared in the form of three women. Why does the author choose to represent God in the form of two women and one man? Exodus 15:3 says, "The Lord is a MAN of war". It does not say that the Lord is woman of war. The Lord Jesus taught his disciples to pray. He told them to pray, "Our Father." We do not say, "Our Mother".
This list could go on and on. There is no excuse for "changing" the gender of God. In fact, The Shack teaches the lie that God is neither a man nor a woman. This is enough to put a book down whose author distorts the image of God to such an extent that it could be labeled ridiculous.
On page 85, "God" says to Mack, "It is not easy to bring resolution to your pain, my love. Believe me. If it were, I would do it right now. But, I do not have a magic wand that I can wave over you to make everything better". (translated from the Spanish version (La Cabaña)).
What a helpless God! It is a good thing that Job, at the end of his fiery trial of faith, did not find the god of The Shack. According to the scriptures, having a spiritual encounter with the God of Israel never fails to revive the person.
On page 75, the god of The Shack tells Mack, the main character of the novel, "We will do things on your terms and in your time". But, king David, a faithful servant of God, said, "But I trusted in thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my God. My times are in thy hand...." (Psalm 31:14-15). And Christ said, "And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say" (Luke 6:46)? In light of these verses and many more, why would we say that the true God allows us to do things on our terms and in our time?
The list of absurdities that are seen in this book unmasks the anti-Christian messages that appear Christian for those who do not know the scriptures.
And What About the Fact that The Shack by WM. Paul Young Has Changed Lives for the Good?
Some might wonder how is it that someone can speak ill of a book that has "blessed" so many lives? But, someone who knows the scriptures does not ask such a question. By knowing the word of God, a person does not allow himself to be so easily deceived. The Lord already warned us of the powerful deception of Satan, his archenemy. We read, "...Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (2 Cor. 11:14).
And, Christ warned his followers when he said, "They shall put you out of the synagogues. Yea, the time cometh that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service" (St. John 16:2).
"For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets; and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect" (Mat. 24:24).
Consequently, the fact that WM. Paul Young has received numerous compliments for The Shack does not cause the true believer in the Bible to overlook the fact that the god with whom the character has an encounter in the novel does not represent at all the God of Israel of the scriptures.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
