The Dangerous Side Effects of Calcium Supplements
Some common side effects of calcium supplements include, but are not limited to impaired digestion, chronic constipation, and headaches. Impaired digestion can quickly lead to poor digestion, which in turn eventually leads to various health problems. Some of them can be extremely serious. This is why we focus on the poor digestion side effect that can, and usually does result from suffering the side effects of calcium supplements.
Beware of the Health Claims of Calcium Supplements
Unfortunately, as people discover the power of all natural medicine and following a healthy diet of organically-grown, non-genetically modified foods, so the claims of quack medicine are being circulated. One source of information on preventing and curing the different forms of cancer claimed that, "cancer cannot live in the body if it is not deficient in the mineral calcium." The ridiculous advice to take supplemental calcium has led to much harm from the health-destroying side effects of calcium supplements.
Constipation is one of the first side effects to appear; and it is often chronic. The use of common sense says that obviously the supplement is not being properly processed by the body. Things that the body does not process, and that cause constipation are harmful. This is so very important to keep in mind, because many parents are giving this mineral to their children without ever really learning the awful side effects of calcium.
Natural Sources of Calcium to Avoid Side Effects of Calcium Supplements
It is common knowledge that calcium plays a role in the development and maintenance of strong teeth and bones. And, it also is vital for proper cardiac health as well as so many other things. However, keep in mind that while so much focus is being placed on calcium, the benefits of the mineral silica are being ignored.
Silica, sometimes called silicon, also is essential for healthy bones and teeth, especially in the healing process when a bone is broken. So, instead of taking risks with the dangerous side effects of calcium supplements, concentrate on getting sufficient calcium and silica too through the diet.
Good natural sources of calcium include: bone broth made from the bones of animals who have not been fed growth hormones and antibiotics, milk, cheese, yogurt, blackstrap molasses, oatmeal, non-GMO soy milk (regular and fortified), greens, almonds, kidney beans, and white beans. The herbs herbs horsetail and oatstraw offer high amounts of silica.
Many people cannot or do not want to drink milk, because they have problems digesting it. They might not have sufficient lactase, the enzyme needed to break down the sugar, lactose. Or, they might be allergic to cassein, a protein found in milk. If the problem is with insufficient lactase, the enzyme can be purchased in most grocery stores. Also, many stores sell lactose-reduced milk, which has a wonderfully sweet taste. It is highly recommended that you avoid homogenized milk as well as milk from cows that have been treated with growth hormones and antibiotics. Let your diet provide you with sufficient calcium instead of taking risks with the side effects of calcium supplements.
