Who Is God Really?
It's extremely important to know the answer to the question: Who is God, really? because many definitions appear to identify the Lord; but, they do so only up to a certain point. Followers of doctrines born out of the New Age such as metaphysics, leave out certain very important information in order to keep people in confusion over the question: Who is God, really?
Socorro Alcalá, author of, Metaphysics, answers this question by explaining that:
"Most people call him 'God', other thinkers, 'Eternal Energy', the followers of hermetic philosophy refer to him as 'The Everything', but in all times his existence has been acknowledged as it is so evident. 'The Everything' is the most appropriate term to use as outside of him absolutely nothing exists. He is the author of all that there is in the universe, and he is so complex that his nature cannot be fully understood. First of all, we can say for sure that nothing exists outside of him. He is not subject to any power that is not his own. He has no beginning or ending. He also does not change. The followers of hermetic philosophy correctly affirm that 'The Everything' is a living mind. 'The Everything' created the universe with his mind, just like man creates images with his brain when he uses his imagination." (English translation from the original Spanish)
Socorro Alcalá's words certainly appear to correctly answer the question: Who is God, really? But, the answer, the description of 'The Everything' is not only incomplete, it contains incorrect information. Yes, it is true that God is the Almighty and the Author of all of creation (Genesis 17:1, St. John 1:1-3). Because of these correct affirmations about God, many anti-Christian doctrines, by passing as biblical teachings, can infiltrate the mind of people, including Christians.
Who Is God, Really, According to the Word of God?
We chose to use the doctrine of metaphysics as an example because it attempts to align itself with Christianity. We said that the description of "The Everything", who is supposedly God, according to metaphysics, is wrong because it teaches erroneous things and because it lacks detail by leaving out, on purpose, one of the most important characteristics of God.
How is the metaphysics answer wrong in answering the question: Who is God, really? According to the concepts of metaphysics, God created the universe with his mind. But, that is not what the Bible says. We read, "In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God SAID, Let there be light: and there was light. And God SAID, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters. And God SAID, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together.... And God SAID: Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit.... And God SAID, Let there be lights in the firmament.... And God SAID, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life... (Genesis 1:1-3,6,9,11,14,20).
Who is God, really? He is the Spirit who created all things by his word. We see repeatedly in the scriptures that God created the universe by SPEAKING things into existence such as "Let there be light" and "let the earth bring forth". The Bible does not say that he created the universe with his mind by thinking or imagining things into existence, but rather with his Word.
We also read, "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (Genesis 2:7). The anti-Christian philosophy of metaphysics says that "The Everything" created everything that exists with his mind. But, the Bible says that God FORMED man from the dust of the earth, that he blew into his nostrils the breath of life so that he would come alive. This is NOT creating man with his mind. Who is God, really? He certainly is NOT the same spirit as "The Everything".
We already have the first warning sign that the teachings of metaphysics concerning God are not correct. It is clear that "The Everything" is not the same spirit as the Holy Spirit who moved on the face of the deep. Notice that the scriptures call God the "Spirit of God". There is not a single scripture that says that the Almighty is a universal force, eternal energy, a universal mind or Mother Nature.
Who is God, really? The Word of God tells us that he is a Spirit who has a distinct personality. Man can anger and please him. Man can have a personal and loving relationship with him, talk to him, listen to his voice, and even be guided by him. These things would be impossible were he like "The Everything" which is "eternal energy". Who can have a relationship with energy?
Finally, let's keep in mind the truth that the only true God whose Word created the universe and all that's in it, has a Son, Christ Jesus, his only begotten Son and one of the three persons of the Holy Trinity.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (San Juan 3:16). Throughout the scriptures we are taught that God has a Son whose names, in the Old Testament, are: Wonderful, Counseller, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). He is called Jesus of Nazareth in the New Testament.
Who is God, really? He is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. "And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life" (1 John 5:20).
