Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Sodom and Gomorrah, he sent two angles to save the life of Lot and his family by getting them out of the cities. The angels told Lot, his wife, and his two daughters to run for their lives. They told them NOT to look back or to stop to stay in any part of the plain (Genesis 19:17). But, later we read in Genesis 19:24-26, "Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven. And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt".
Remember the warning that Christ issued when he said, "...No man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62). Lot's wife looked back, and lost her life as she became a pillar of salt. The scriptures do not give the specific reasons why she looked back. But, there's one thing we know for sure. The Lord offered her salvation from perishing in the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, one of the Old Testament shadows of the great spiritual salvation in the New.
Many people to whom the Lord has offered salvation (his Son, Christ Jesus) to save them from his coming wrath, look back. Some of them miss something in their former life style. Others, because of their decision to accept Christ, lost friendships or relationships with family that they miss. Whatever the reason might be for which they look back, they risk loosing their life in Christ. The Lord reminds us of the grave error that Lot's wife committed when he spoke to his disciples regarding the approaching end of the world. In fact, he gave very clear instructions for what we must NOT do when Jesus returns to take us away from Earth that will suffer the punishment of God, like Sodom and Gomorrah suffered.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
