The Seven Promises in the Gospel of St John 14
by Pastor David Leiva
Seven Sevens in the Bible
Introduction: There are sections of the Bible so rich in content that they give way to a wonderful sermon by considering the verses one after another. In this passage, what links all of its parts is the word "promise". Jesus came from God to make us great promises. And, some of the most lovely ones are in this chapter.
Promises of God
1. The promise of a heavenly home (v. 2,3): All young people desire a home. However, the happiness of the best earthly home is temporary. But, the love and happiness that will reign in the Father's House, where millions of his children are to be reunited, are eternal joy. Christ said that he is preparing a place for us. And, he is the only one who can get us ready, while we're here on Earth, that we be worthy and fit to enjoy the good things of such a place (Jud. 1:24)
2. The promise of a road leading to home (v.6): To the lost and wandering person in a world that Satan has driven mad, and where there are many roads to false Christs, the true way is offered to lead him to the Father's House. 3. The promise of a loving Father (vv. 7-12): The pagan gods were terrible and cruel, like Moloc or Baal (Lv. 18:21; 2 Reyes 16:3). But the Almighty God, like a loving and kind Father, offers himself in his grace to those who trust in Christ (John. 1:12, 20:17).
4. The promise of safe shelter (vv. 13,14): When the burdens of life weigh down and trials afflict us in our walk toward the heavenly Home, the believer can take refuge in prayer with the assurance that God hears him (Psalm. 34:4–6; Phillippians 4:6–7).
5. The promise of a divine comforter (v. 16,17,26): This is the Holy Spirit who is in, and with the believer in Christ. He is the Revealer of things that Christ said that comfort and make the heart merry.
6. The promise of glorious company (v. 21-23): Christ not only offers his home, he has also promised, by his Spirit, to come to live in our own homes and in our hearts if we are walking with him. 7. The promise of a peace that is like no other (v. 27): The peace that the world gives is false and fluctuating. Today we have a peace that can be lost for any reason; but the Lord gives us peace with God (Rom. 5:1). He promised to give us peace, but not like that of the world.
Seven Glorious Realities
"Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God" (Psalm 87:3).
1.The glorious gospel of God:
"According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust" (1 Tim. 1:11; Rom. 1:1).
2. The glorious Gospel of Christ:
"But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost, in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them" (2 Cor. 4:3, 4; Rom. 1:9, 16).
3. The glorious church:
"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish" (Ephesians 5:25–27; Acts 20:28).
4. A glorious power:
That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness" (Col. 1:10, 11; Eph. 3:16).
5. Glorious freedom:
"Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God" (Rom. 8:21; Gal. 5:1).
6. Glorious appearance:
"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ" (Tit. 2:13; 1 John 3:2; 2 Tim. 4:8).
7. A glorious body:
"For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ: who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself" (Phil. 3:20, 21).
