Calvina, the young battered wife of Duane, is in desperate need of a new start in life. Will her jealous husband, the mad man with whom she had been unequally yoked, prove too much to ever hope for a chance of staying together--a chance to fix her troubled marriage?
We encourage you to read the two main character profiles before reading the first chapter. We can be so wrong in the strong initial opinions we form of people, which we see in The Beauty Of Staying Together (originally published under the title: Detour), a story based on true events. The Bible teaches us that God is in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (If you do not understand this truth, we invite you to read The Holy Trinity in the Bible: God in Three Persons) If we believe this truth, why then do we neither practice nor encourage prayer to the Holy Spirit? The scripture of 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that all scripture was given by inspiration by God for the purpose of teaching us. It is our doctrine. In a nutshell, the Bible teaches what we should and should not do. So, should we pray to the Holy Spirit or not?
We do not believe in it. Why? Simply because not only do we never see any of the Old or New Testament saints praying directly to the Spirit of God, we even have specific instructions from our Lord for how to pray. The closest followers of the Lord Jesus obtained the answer we all need to the question of how we are to pray in obedience to God. We read, “His disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name...” (Luke 11:1-2).
We see here that the Lord Jesus is plainly telling us to direct our prayers to the Father. In the scripture of St. John 14:14, we see further instruction on prayer when requesting things of the Father. In this scripture Jesus says, “If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it.” When we pray for something, we're asking something of God. We've learned that we should direct our prayers to the Father. Now we've just learned that when making requests, we should ask in Jesus' name. So then, we pray to the Father in Jesus' name. These are biblical instructions that came from the mouth of the Lord Himself. This is why many Christians pray to the Father, making requests in Jesus' name. They are following Jesus' instructions for all of His disciples.
While we do not criticize any of our brethren who pray to the Holy Spirit or who pray to Jesus, we choose not to take up such a practice nor to encourage it, because we believe Christ has taught us the proper way to pray. He taught us to pray to the Father, and to make our requests to the Father in His name.
