Domestic Violence from an African American Perspective: A Resource for Black Christian Marriage Counselors
Although The Beauty of Staying Together by Vanessa Winters tackles domestic violence from an African American perspective, it has been labeled a most valuable and thought-provoking read for anyone wanting to deal with the subject from a Christian point of view as well. This is why we highly recommend this novela based on real life to Black Christian Marriage counselors truly reaching out to African American clients in similar situations. We stress "similar", realizing that even within the same culture no life is a carbon copy of another. However, there are unique patterns of thought, challenges and customs that do influence, and even shape our lives whether for good or bad. Sometimes these patterns of thought, challenges and customs must be understood in order to offer the best counsel. And, let us remember that that counsel should always be in line with the scriptures of the Holy Bible regardless of the culture in question. This is exactly what Ms. Winters has skillfully accomplished in The Beauty of Staying Together.

Again, tackling domestic violence from an African American perspective does not translate to solving domestic violence within African American communities with "African American solutions". True faith in the Word of God is the answer for all people of all cultures. This novela based on true events simply allows readers of different cultures and backgrounds to better understand this most important topic and problem within the Black community. Many African American readers, particularly those who came from similar economic and religious backgrounds, are able to identify with the tumultuous events in the young couple's life on a more personal level.
Due to the issues that are raised and biblically answered in this read, we highly recommend the reading of the profiles of the main characters before delving into the book. Why? Because most of us cannot help but to form certain opinions as soon as we hear certain things about someone, and as soon as we see a person. While this is not always a bad thing, we are sometimes very mistaken in our judgments. What opinions will you form from reading the profiles? How will your opinions change?
