Calvina, the young battered wife of Duane, is in desperate need of a new start in life. Will her jealous husband, the mad man with whom she had been unequally yoked, prove too much to ever hope for a chance of staying together--a chance to fix her troubled marriage?
We encourage you to read the two main character profiles before reading the first chapter. We can be so wrong in the strong initial opinions we form of people, which we see in The Beauty Of Staying Together (originally published under the title: Detour), a story based on true events. On the subject of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues, we'd like to point out that the gift of tongues spoken of in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 is not the same thing as speaking in tongues as the "evidence" of the baptism of the Spirit. Note that we say "evidence", because there are believers who have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but the evidence or confirmation--which is speaking in tongues--will come later. The Bible proves through its teachings that the gift of tongues and speaking in tongues are not the same thing.
Notice that passages that speak of people being filled with the Spirit say that they spoke in tongues, or that there was another visible sign of the baptism (Acts 2:4, 10:45-46). The passage of Acts 8:18 is the only one that does not say the people spoke in tongues when they were filled with the Spirit. Nevertheless, it does say, "When Simon SAW that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money."
Note that Scripture says, "...when Simon SAW...the Holy Ghost was given..." The Bible tells us God's Spirit is invisible (1 Timothy 1:17), so by "saw", we know there was some type of manifestation of the baptism in the Spirit that they received. Could the manifestation have been something like falling to the ground, or shouting praises? No, because had it been common for the baptism to be manifested in various ways, ¿how was Simon so sure they had received the Spirit? He affirmed that they had been baptized with the Spirit, and he was right, which the Bible confirms. On this note, we should ask ourselves that if speaking in tongues is simply one of the spiritual gifts God gives, why does everyone who is baptized in the Spirit receive the same gift...the gift of tongues? What about the other gifts? What's more is Jesus Himself calls speaking in tongues a sign. He said, "These signs shall follow them that believe. In my name shall they cast out devils. They shall speak with new tongues." We cannot translate "sign" to "gift". Now we are going to see how the Bible debunks erroneous teachings on the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues. There is a reason why we read, "...Forbid not to speak with tongues." (1 Corinthians 14:39).
