Unmasking The Spirit Of AntiChrist According To 1 John 4:1-3
It should be said that, according to biblical Scripture, the son of perdition who will rull the world is NOT called the Antichrist, but rather the first beast (Revelation, chapter 14). With that clear, let's move on to the true identity of the spirit of antichrist.
What Does The Spirit Of Antichrist Do?
We read, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God. And this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come. And even now already is it in the world." (1 John 4:1-3).
We've just learned that the spirit of antichrist causes people to deny that Jesus came in the flesh. It's obvious that the "antichrist" refers collectively to many evil spirits who deceive people into NOT believing Jesus was God incarnate (in the flesh). He says "spirit", but there are many. The passage says there are MANY false prophets who have gone out into the world. And in each of them dwells the spirit of antichrist. So, the spirit of antichrist is many spirits who deceive many into rejecting Christ's divinity. However mighty angels are, they are not like God. They are not omnipresent. So, many evil spirits work together to be able to influence many all at the same time. That influence is the spirit of antichrist.
Also notice that he says Jesus has come "in the flesh", because this passage revolves around this truth. "In the flesh" is what tells us Jesus is divine. Perhaps that truth doesn't jump out at us, but it's there. Think about it. We already know everyone comes to this world with a physical body, so you don't need to say "in the flesh" to refer to an ordinary person. That's how we know the author is talking about someone who must be very different from the rest of the world. He sees it so necessary to emphasize this that he even says that whoever does NOT confess that Jesus has come in the flesh is NOT of God. St. John 1:1 tells us the Word was God. Later, in the same chapter, we read that that Word was made flesh (St. John 1:14). Thus, God in the flesh.
Why Does He Say, "Every Spirit That Confesseth"?
To whom is he referring when he says, "every spirit that confesseth"? He is talking about ALL spiritual beings, man as well as angelic beings. Yes. Man is a spiritual being, because he's composed of three parts: mind, body and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
Now then, holy angels as well as fallen angels (evil spirits) are spirits. Fallen angels often pass themselves off as extraterrestrials and / or holy angels in order to deceive. We know people tell their stories of "close encounters of the third kind" in which an "extraterrestrial" preaches a gospel that does not include the divinity of Jesus. Thanks to Galatians 1:8, we are warned about this. We read, "But though we, or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:8).
It's not surprising that so-called "holy" angels have appeared and spoken about another Jesus...one who is not divine. Do we not know that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light? (2 Corinthians 11:14). And let's not forget that there are three heavens (1 Cor. 15:4, 2 Cor. 12:2), and that many evil spirits (demons and devils) inhabit the lower heaven. The sixth chapter of Ephesians, which deals with the armor of God, speaks of "spiritual wickedness in HIGH places." (Ephesians 6:12). "High places" refers to the heavens.
The reason Paul says, "But though we...preach any other gospel unto you..." is because even true believers can change. They can backslide, like two of Paul's partners did. And if believers change, they can become dangerous and fierce enemies. On this is what we will now focus. Why? Because probably one of the best ways to bring your enemy down is to infiltrate his camp. That is exactly what many false Christians are doing now. Yes. There are many who say they are Christian, but they have the spirit of antichrist. They deny the divnity of Jesus.
Although Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism are anti-christian doctrines, because they all deny the divinity of Christ, their followers are not always the worst enemies Christians can have. Who were the people who shouted, "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"? They were priests (St. John 19:6). Crucifixion is one of the cruelest way to execute someone. It's a very slow and agonizing death. The only reason Jesus didn't last as long as the other two men with which He was crucified is because He had already lost so much blood. They whipped and beat Him before crucifying Him.
The spirit of antichrist was in many--NOT all--of the Jews then, among whom were priests and other religious leaders. We read, "...The high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said (it)... Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high pries rent his clothes, saying He hath spoken blasphemy..." (Matthew 26:63-65).
It's clear that "Son of God" meant divinity. If your Father is God, and you have no mother, you cannot be anything less than God. This is why we read, "Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God." (St. John 5:18).
The spirit of antichrist is most dangerous. It is already in the world. And the time is coming when people who say they're Christians--but who are of the spirit of antichrist--will murder those in whom the Spirit of God lives. It is God's Spirit who teaches us that His Son is equal to Him.
Jesus Himself warned us that, "...The time cometh that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service." (St. John 16:2).
The Jehovah's Witnesses and more and more denominations definitely deny the divinity of Jesus. Yes, we're obligated to warn people concerning this, and obligated to try to win them to Christ.
Nevertheless, it is NOT okay to allow people to blur the dividing lines between the identity of Jesus of Nazareth and any other false Christ, of whom the Scriptures warn (Matthew 24:24). Based on Scripture, we do not believe it is okay to pray or serve in ministry with anyone who rejects the divinity of Christ. The apostle said, "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?" (2 Corinthians 6:14-16).
