What Therapist Could Fix My Awful Problems?
Fifteen-year-old Kaitlyn could not have been less hopeful about attending Ms. Teemer's group. Only after much persuasion from Ursa, her best friend, did she finally agree to try out what the students called "group", mainly to prove Ursa wrong. To prove that some problems are so bad that not even the best therapy can alleviate them, let alone solve them.
Undoubtedly, many people can identify with the despair Kaitlyn was experiencing in her life. But, how many can identify with the power of words to light a candle in the midst of darkness? A candle that--though it might not be able to totally illuminate--can provide you enough light to find an escape. To her great surprise, this is a truth that young Kaitlyn discovered during her very first encounter with a dedicated reality para-therapist who worked with troubled youth.
Kaitlyn was certainly justified in her negative reaction when she was invited to participate in Ms. Teemer's group therapy meetings in which the youngsters tackled an array of issues life can throw at us. But Kaitlyn was not initially interested.
"What is sitting around, and discussing problems going to do for me?" she'd ask her friend.
And before Ursa could rebut, Kaitlyn reminded her that nothing, no words, and no therapy was going to change her family. No therapy was going to speed her age up to adulthood, so she could make her own decisions. They might be bad ones. But at least they'd be her own. Her thoughts were logical. But sometimes the illogical is our answer. This truth does not make reality therapy unrealistic, but rather it can sometimes snatch away some of the power of a reality that needs to be changed for the better.
Can you identify with Kaitlyn's thoughts? She is not a character in a work of fiction, but rather was a real individual whose name was changed for the purpose of this writing. You, the reader of this, are also real, perhaps with real problems needing real therapy. Are you curious what a good reality therapy session might entail? If so, read the following excerpt of The Third Man by Angela Sheffield to peer into what we might call "therapy world". The Third Man is based on true events.
Beginning of Excerpt from The Third Man
Ms Allen then leaned forward and the two women's eyes locked. “Listen to me, Ethel. You asked for christian counseling. And that's what you're going to get.
“You said,” Ms Allen continued as she leaned back into her chair. “That you can't help it that you're ugly. And nobody likes you except your one sister... Have you ever, once questioned if the dislike you believe people have for you, is only because of your looks? Because I have to tell you...” Ms Allen again leaned forward as she continued. “In all of my experience, I've never known that to be the sole reason for people not liking an individual. And I have to tell you... I don't believe... No, I know it's not the sole reason in your situation either. Furthermore, I know that you know why you are disliked by some people. One thing that's going to happen in our sessions is that we're going to be completely honest with one another. Let's get that straight right now.”
Ethel stared hard at Ms Allen as she pushed against the arms of her chair to slowly raise herself. from her seat. As she moved her body up from the chair, she never broke her gaze at Ms Allen. “All this talkin' ain't gonna do a thing for me.” She raised an arm to wipe away the tears on her sleeve. She then narrowed her eyes, pursed her lips, and exhaled heavily before slowly turning to leave.
“I'm not going to let you give up before we even get started,” Ms Allen responded as she stood to her feet. “Like it or not, you are going to see this through or you'll be here for a long, long time. Understand!”
Ms. Allen turned to walk to her desk. She stopped abruptly, looked over her shoulder and said, “Be prepared to give me reasons, other than your looks, why you honestly believe the people in your life don't like or get along with you.” She heard her office door softly close as Ethel left.
