A Christian View of Halloween

cross.jpg

Biblical scripture from which the Christian view of Halloween is formed reveals that Halloween celebrations are neither innocent nor harmless in the eyes of God. Some people think, even after hearing what the Bible says about the subject of Halloween and Christianity, that scripture is speaking specifically against the real-life practice of sins such as witchcraft, Satanism, necromancy (talking to the deceased) etc., not to the seemingly harmless practice of only pretending to be involved with these practices for fun during Halloween. But, if man's reasoning and logic were sufficient to tell him how to distinguish good from evil, light from darkness, and holy from unholy, he wouldn't have been given an instruction book--the Bible.

God's word makes it plain that even pretending to be involved with the occult is not innocent or harmless. Ecclesiastes 3:4 lets us know that there's a time for everything, including laughter, so, we know there's nothing wrong with being entertained or having fun AS LONG AS we are not irreverent before God in having that fun. This is why we have warnings in various scriptures that give us to know that some things are not to be said or done even as a joke. Ephesians 5:3-4 speaks to the believer and says, "Let it not be once named among you as becometh saints, neither filthiness nor foolish talking nor jesting (joking). And proverbs 24:9 says, "The thought of foolishness is sin." Again, scripture has already assured us that there's nothing wrong with clean fun and laughter, but when that fun and laughter is offensive to God in any way, it's no longer clean, it's foolishness because it's sin and only fools make a mockery of sin according to Proverbs 14:9.

A Brief History oh Halloween

The Druids believed that Halloween was when the god of death allowed the dead to return to earth creating an atmosphere of death and terror. They believed that on that night nothing separated the dead from the living. Both could freely communicate with one another. According to Celtic religion, the souls of some of the dead were trapped inside wild, ferocious animals and that it was possible to liberate them with sacrifices. Both animals and people were sacrificed on that night to liberate the "trapped" souls of some of the deceased. They also believed that evil spirits in the form of ghosts, goblins, monsters etc. freely went out to terrorize people. To appease these evil spirits and protect themselves from being attacked by them they would make huge bonfires and/or costumes for themselves. These costumes were for the purpose of dressing up like the evil beings they feared in order to pass as one of them and thus not be harmed. This is the root of the practice of wearing Halloween costumes. Clearly, Halloween is the celebration of the fear of death and evil power.

We return to God's word where in Deuteronomy 18:10-12 we read, "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire (offer in sacrifice) or that useth divination or an observer of times (fortune telling) or an enchanter or a witch or a charmer or a consulter with familiar spirits (demons) or a wizard or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord."

It defies logic to think that the Lord would find the celebration of things that he has called an abomination an innocent act. In 1 John 8:3, we are told that God sent his Son to destroy the works of Satan. Do we really think we can celebrate the works of Satan even in pretense and honor God at the same time? The controversial topic of building a Mosque near ground zero is a prime example of the power of symbols. There are a plethora of commandments in the Koran which is the instruction book for those who follow the Islamic faith. The Koran calls for the utter crushing and destruction of everyone who refuses to follow Islam; therefore, it's no wonder that many people view the mosque as a symbol of the 9/11 tragedy and a slap in the face. Does not a faithful Muslim follow the Koran? If he doesn't, isn't he or she a hypocrite? If he slaughters non-Muslims, he's being obedient to his god. And how does God view the celebration of evil and the symbols of evil when his Son went to Calvary to die a torturous death on the cross to free man from evil? The scripture of Malachi 1:6 is just one of many that answers that question. It says, "A son honoreth his father and a servant his master. If then I be a father, where is mine honor? And if I be a master, where is my fear? Saith the Lord of host unto you...?"

In the scripture of Luke 10:19 Jesus told his disciples, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpion and over all the power of the enemy...." Are we to be entertained and have fun with serpents and scorpions and the power of the enemy and then have power to tread on them? God's power is never handled in such a disrespectful way. This is why Jesus said in Mark 9:39, "...There is no man which shall do a miracle in my name that can lightly speak evil of me. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why miracles in the church are almost obsolete. Christians dishonor God by celebrating evil at Halloween and then weeks later at Christmas time celebrate the Son of God who was sent to destroy evil (1 John 8:3, Colossians 2:15, Hebrews 2:14-15).

There are so many more biblical warnings that unmask the sin of attempting to mock God, making light of the gift of his Son, celebrating and honoring what the Lord has called evil and an abomination, and having fun in embracing the fear of death and evil instead of learning to fear God. There's nothing at all funny about the warning that Jesus issued in the scripture of Luke 12:4-5. He taught, "And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. But, I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear. Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell, yea, I say unto you, fear him."

I read your article concerning Halloween. I found it lacking in substance and content. What is your view concerning 'fall festivals' ? Is dressing a child in a lamb's costume an attempt to mock God? I would argue that there are many more facets to the tradition and holiday we celebrate as Halloween. To issue a blanket statement of total condemnation is a bit hasty in my opinion. I would hope to explore this in more detail. Any body else willing to discuss? Thanks, and God Bless!

To J Justus:

You say that you found the article lacking in substance and content. Did you find it lacking in scriptural support of what is being said? You have not refuted even one of the numerous scriptures provided in the article. Those scriptures clearly and forcefully speak against the celebration of Halloween--the celebration of evil things, according to the word of God, which should never take a back seat to opinion or to man's tradition.
