What Does the Bible Say About Eating Disorders and Gluttony?

Eating Disorders: Is Gluttony One of Them?

Although medical science has proven that the causes of obesity are not always linked to diet or gluttony, most obese people are overweight because they over eat. Of course, there are also slender people who over eat. Gluttony, when it comes to food, is almost always an expression of discontentment, unhappiness, and depression even among Christians. This truth is widely known; however, over eating, which can be considered a type of eating disorder, prevails in societies where there is no scarcity of food. Why? Is no help or counsel being offered to those who continue to over eat? Help and counsel is often offered, but seldom received.

Gluttonous and Still Hungry

Millions of people worldwide live in conditions which understandably keep them unhappy and depressed. A good number of those people don't have enough food to over eat in an attempt to pacify their discontentment. What is more is many who are fortunate enough to have the means to practice gluttony when it comes to food never stop to think of the people in situations much worse than the one in which they're found. In fact, numerous people who have financial comfort, reasonably good physical health, a good spouse, a career they enjoy, family and friends, suffer depression for no apparent reason. While such people cannot really expect attention to be given to the mysterious reason/s for their depression by those who lack such important things in their own life, it's important to examine why so many people who have so much suffer from eating disorders provoked by discontentment and depression.

Despite attempts by such people to "eat" their way to satisfaction in their practice of gluttony, they remain hungry for something--but what? One Christian lady who now pastors a church in Canovanas, Puerto Rico, revealed how she was restless and unhappy despite the blessing of her health, a good husband, children, a career, a loving family, and financial stability. She then revealed in her testimony of how she was introduced to Jesus whom she received as Lord and Savior--the joy that was missing in her life. This is why believers in Christ continue to point unhappy, confused, disturbed, and depressed people to their Savior. Most of these people come to identify with the pastor who could not fully enjoy life until after she had given her life to Christ. However, depression among Christians and non-Christians alike persists because unhappiness with life will keep company with anyone who invites it through certain actions--or inaction.

What Goes Around Comes Around--Including Happiness

Due to the rampant acts of evil in the world, the reminder, "You reap what you sow," usually reminds people of the "payday" that's coming to all who've done others wrong. Nevertheless, the Bible teaches that people, Christians and non-Christians alike, not only reap the evil they've sown, they also reap the good they've sown. The scripture of Galatians 6:7-10 says, "Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh (evil) shall of the flesh reap corruption; but, he that soweth to the Spirit (of God) shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith."

Gluttony in the form of over eating, the making of money or anything else is not prescribed by the counsel of God's word as a cure for unhappiness. Filling one's stomach doesn't fill one's life with contentment neither does filling the pocket with money bring any real joy or peace. The former gang member Nikki Cruz, author of "Run Baby Run," spoke of how good he felt the first time he did something good for someone else. How many people who over eat to pacify themselves stop to think about the people who can't even eat sufficient amounts of food to stay healthy? How many people who heap riches on top of riches to themselves, including those who say that they are Christians, reach out financially to the viciously persecuted and impoverished body of Christ? Wonderful ministries such as the Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) and In Jesus' Name Ministries offer excellent opportunities to relieve suffering in God's servants around the world. How many people seek happiness in their own life, but are unwilling to volunteer even a fraction of their time to help someone else to be happy? In fact, jealously often sets in when they see others receive good things in life.

How many Christians are genuinely seeking to do the will of God unless his will revolves around what they seek for their own comfort and pleasure? How many people who don't know Christ in the pardon of their sins remain unhappy, restless, and depressed; yet, they refuse to give their life to the Lord? While there's absolutely nothing wrong with desiring good things in this life, there is something wrong when a person's only real concerns are always concentrated on him or herself. Self-centeredness and constant selfishness is not of the Spirit of Christ. Envy and jealousy is not of Christ; gluttony and over eating is not of Christ; and where Christ is not found, there can be no real joy or peace.

What Does the Bible Say About Eating Disorders and Gluttony? Nothing positive. Proverbs 23:21 says, "For drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty...." Sometimes that "poverty" is poverty of the spirit who can't find joy, happiness, and contentment in life.
