A Christian Perspective on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

pyramid_sunset.jpg

The seven wonders of the ancient world include the great pyramid of Giza, believed to be the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, the hanging gardens of Babylon, also known as the rooftop gardens, the pharos or lighthouse of Alexandria, the temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the colossus of Rhodes, the statue of Zeus at Olympia, and the mausoleum at Halicarnassus. A very interesting point that people have made is that these structures, amazing as they are, have rivals in other parts of the world that the conqueror Alexander the Great never lived to see. Some have declared that the following structures are just as worthy of being labeled a wonder of the ancient world: the great wall of China, Stonehenge, the temple that Solomon built in honor and worship of God described in great detail in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible, the city of Jerusalem, the clay army found in a tomb in China; and there are more. Obviously, the ancients were very skilled architects who took great pride in their work. The accepted list of seven wonders of the ancient world were all constructed by followers of paganism who erected buildings, temples, and statues in honor and worship of their gods.

Zeus the Greek God, Poseidon, and the Goddess Artemis Are Honored and Worshiped

Those who truly love the Son of God, although intrigued by the seven wonders of the ancient world, cannot "adore" them in the same way that the world can. Why? Because they were, and still are in the case of the still standing pyramid of Giza, physical reminders and a tribute to the practice of idolatry. The overwhelming majority of Americans are well aware of what God said about idolatry. Zeus the Greek god was honored in a great statue, the goddess Artemis, also known as Diana among the Romans, is honored in the temple built for her to inhabit, the pharos of Alexandria was crowned by a statue of the Greek god Poseidon, and ancient Egypt and Babylon revolved around the worship of idols or paganism. Christians can certainly realize the great feats that were achieved by the ancients in the building of these wonders and admire their awesome artistic and mechanical skill, determination, dedication, hard work, organization, and incredible ingenuity so great that even today it is not known for sure how the pyramid of Giza was constructed. Nevertheless, such a fascination is faded by the fact that structures gave at least some honor to idols.

Idol Gods and the God of the Christian Bible

Most all of the ancient Greeks, before there were any converts to Christianity from the apostle Paul's preaching of the gospel of Jesus, believed that their king of gods, Zeus, was supreme and that all other gods were subject to him and that mortals were subject to the lesser gods. Bible-believing Christians, however, believe otherwise because scripture declares, "For all the gods of the people are idols, but the Lord made the heavens" (KJV, 1 Chronicles 16:26). Also, God said, "I am the Lord and there is none else, there is no God beside me..." (Isaiah 45:5).

But, is there any reason why these words are believed by many and the words of the ancient believers in mythology rejected? The following is an excerpt from the article, "Bible Fun Facts to Test Your Knowledge of God's Word."

"Isaiah 40:22 says, "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth..." The Hebrew word used for circle is "chwug" meaning spherical or arched in shape and ruling out the possibility that the prophet thought that Earth was a flat circle. Remember, there were no telescopes in existence during the Old Testament times. Job 26:7 reads, "He stretcheth out the north over the empty place and hangeth the earth upon nothing." It isn't difficult to understand someone who lived in Old Testament times describing gravity as "nothing." These ancient people would have pictured a spherical planet being held in orbit by what looked like nothing--the invisible force of gravity. How would they have known what it took scientists thousands of years to "discover?"

This is an extremely short list of the literally thousands of Bible fun facts that, when taught, can actually help a person grow closer to grasping the majesty and authority of the God of creation. Sadly, I've never heard them taught in any Sunday school or Bible class or lesson, or from the pulpit. These interesting Bible facts have and continue to amaze Christians as well as people of other faiths."

Christians should be reminded of the splendid beauty and grandeur of the temple of Solomon built in honor and worship of the Savior and Creator and of the awesome and majestic city of Jerusalem as both have been named as wonders of the ancient world even by those who are not of the Christian faith. However, followers of Christ who truly understand the scriptural teachings of the habitation of God and how he sees the Earth, aren't necessarily "proud" that a most beautiful temple adorned with precious metals and jewels was built to "house" and honor him. Why? The words of Phylo of Byzantium who wrote about one of the seven wonders of the world gives a clue to the answer. It's recorded that when he wrote about the temple of Artemis at Ephesus, he said, "He who hath laid eyes on it once will be convinced that the world of the immortal gods has moved from heaven to earth."

Although Christians might be tempted to be proud of the monuments that our spiritual ancestors built to our Lord, we must remember that our Savior cannot really be contained or housed within structures made by the hands of mortals because even the Earth is but a footstool to him and he is omnipresent.

"God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands. Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things" (The Acts 17:24-25). The apostle Paul preached these words while he was in the city of Athens. Unlike many Christians today, he was not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus nor reluctant to declare the sovereignty of the Lord, come criticism, persecution, and finally martyrdom.

"Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house that ye build unto me? And where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord..." (Isaiah 66:1-2).

The Third Man by Angela Sheffield Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
