Who Are the children of God?
The Offspring of God and the Children of God
Some people will be angered over this message, but it says nothing different than what is taught in biblical scripture regarding who the children of God are. Those who affirm that all men are God's children would be more correct if they said that all men are God's offspring. When speaking in scientific terms, a son or daughter is the offspring of his or her parents, but when a loving parent speaks as a parent, his or her "offspring" is referred to as a son or daughter or child because of the relationship. Now, there are parents who don't love their children who will still refer to them as their child, but no loving parent calls his or her child an offspring; if he did, he'd receive some strange looks.
All men are the offspring of God whether they believe in him or not, whether they are good or evil, weather they worship him or not. They are still his offspring because their very existence is God's doing and God is the one who has ultimate power over their life and death. The scripture of Acts 17:29 says, "...we are the offspring of God...." Believers in Christ and those who don't believe are the offspring of God when speaking of the Lord as Creator; however, only those who have accepted Jesus as Lord are referred to in scripture as the children of God or the sons of God because of the relationship that exists between them and the Lord. If everyone is automatically a child of God simply because he's a creature of God, there would be no need for the scripture of St. John 1:12 and others like it that speak of a person becoming a child of God. You don't have to become what you already are. St. John 1:12 says, "But as many as received him (Jesus), to them gave he power to become the sons of God."
The Bible uses symbols to teach spiritual truths; for example, "flesh" is one of many terms that refers to man who is not in fellowship with Christ and lives according to his sin nature. Although such a person is still the offspring of God, he is actually referred to by the Bible as a child of the flesh, not of the Spirit (of God). Romans 9:8 reads, "That is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God...." Everyone has been a child of the flesh, but those who heard and believed the gospel unto repentance, accepting the Son of God as Savior, received power from him to become one of the children of God, a blessing open to all who will love and obey the Lord.
