Jesus the Man and His Work
What Exactly Is the Ministry of Jesus?
Jesus the Lord and Jesus the man and his work are vividly revealed in the scriptures of the Christian Bible. His true followers (Christians), therefore, are concerned with living out the words of the Savior when he said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father" (KJV, St. John 14:12). The works of Jesus are the ministry of Jesus. It's very important for every believer to be reminded of these words because they prompt an important question that he can ask himself: What is the ministry of Jesus and Am I truly following Jesus the man and his work according to how he himself explained what his work is?
Christ read about himself from the Old Testament when he said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord" (Luke 4:18-19).
This is the ministry of Jesus. These are the works to be done by the Lord's followers who say, "We'll work till Jesus comes." It's good to do things such as knit booties for premature babies, donate money from a handsome income to charities, place Christian bumper stickers on one's car, or even volunteer in a soup kitchen for the homeless. Nevertheless, these things do take the place of doing the ministry of Jesus which involves "rolling up one's sleeves and getting dirty hands."
Jesus the Lord and Jesus the man and his work consisted of delivering captives who wanted to be set free, of healing a sick mind, a diseased body, and a troubled spirit. It consisted of opening physically and spiritually blinded eyes and preaching the gospel. The true ministry of Jesus is not always safe. It is not always comfortable, "clean," smooth, or "pretty" and prissy when viewed from a natural aspect. This is why it is embraced by very few Christians.
