Gingko Biloba: Restore Mental Vitality?
Individuals with weakened circulatory systems often exhibit symptoms of decreased blood flow to vital areas of the body including the brain. Dementia, poor memory, and difficulty concentrating figure among the most common warning signs.
Gingko leaves contain substances known as ginkgolides. Ginkgolides increase blood flow by dilating (opening wider) vessels carrying this liquid of life to every cell. Macular degeneration and asthma also appear on the list of diseases that may be connected to poor circulation.
Gingko Biloba is normally sold in concentrated forms such as extracts, tablets, and capsules. The crude leaves may be obtained as a bulk herb. Gingko has been used since antiquity, but only the natural form was employed--the bulk herb from which an infusion may be made.
Due to Gingko's dilating action on blood vessels, it's use isn't recommended for people taking blood-thinning medications.
Green Tea: Barrier To Cancer?
Practically every green tea supplement boasts of its presence of antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that help to protect against cell damage caused by free radicals (unstable molecules) that circulate within the body.
When cells are damaged by free radicals, degenerative diseases, including cancer, may develop. Green tea is also high in naturally occurring fluoride, known to help prevent dental decay, but supplements containing sugar should be avoided. The best way to ingest green tea is by drinking the infusion made with organically grown leaves. Green tea contains caffeine and tannins so insomnia and nausea may occur.
Omega-3s: Heart-Friendly Oils?
Sufficient intake of omega-3 oils are believed to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, macular degeneration, diabetes, and heart disease. Societies that consume foods high in these oils suffer less from these diseases. However, omega-3 supplements should never be compared to a diet naturally rich in these polyunsaturated fats. Why? Many of the world's waters are polluted with mercury and PCB. Omega-3 supplements made from the oil of contaminated fish aren't healthy. Also, fish oil quickly becomes rancid (spoiled), increasing risk of damage from free radicals.
When supplements are necessary, it's wise to know what to look for. The label should inform that the oil is pharmaceutical grade and taken from fish from unpolluted sources. Molecular distillation is desirable ensuring the removal of toxins. Finally, opening a capsule to see if the oils has a strong smell checks for rancidity.
St. John's Wort: Cure For Depression?
St. John's Wort is a yellow, flowering herb known to increase levels of neurotransmitters that lift one's mood. It's available as pills, tincture, and bulk herb. In Germany, it's confirmed to help in treating anxiety, sleep disorders and tension headaches, but is it a cure for depression? Dr. Richard C. Shelton, professor of Psychiatry, led a study revealing its ineffectiveness to treat depression in participants at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Roughly 300mg is taken 2-3 times per day, allowing a few weeks for results. Possible side effects include upset stomach, restlessness, and dizziness. St. John's Wort also increases one's sensitivity to light so exposure to the sun isn't recommended. HIV/AIDS patients should seek medical advice before taking St. John's Wort.
Coenzyme Q10: Fighting Breast Cancer?
While Coenzyme Q10 isn't a vitamin, like vitamins, it promotes health and helps the body fight disease. Scientists believe Coenzyme Q10 to be an antioxidant, a substance that resists damage by free radicals. It's also believed to fortify immunity and benefit the heart as high levels are found in a healthy heart and low levels in breast cancer patients.
There are no studies confirming the efficacy of Coenzyme Q10 in the fight against heart disease or breast cancer. It's widely distributed in foods such as fish and nuts, the sources from which it should be obtained.
Some side effect include headache, fatigue, and loss of muscle control. The supplement tends to thin the blood, therefore, it shouldn't be taken with other blood-thinning medications.
