Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
One mistake that even believers who are genuinely laboring in the Christian ministry to which God has called them can make is one of being too rigid and strict when it comes to their duties in sharing the gospel of Jesus. For example, those who have a prison ministry might believe that they cannot and will not ever be used to minister to people from other walks of life. A believer who was assigned by the Lord a Christian ministry with children might think that he or she cannot and will not ever be used to minister to adults or vice versa. But, God's word reminds us that we are clay (Isaiah 45:9) in God's hands. It appears that many people understand this to be clay that is formed once for a specific Christian ministry and is never again reshaped for another ministry or work. However, spiritual clay is not that rigid; it must be flexible to be formed into an instrument for one work and into another instrument for a different type of work according to God's will, purposes and timing.
There are numerous examples of this truth regarding Christian ministry found in biblical scripture. Galatians 2:7 informs the reader that the apostle Peter was sent by God to minister the gospel of Jesus to the Jews, also called the circumcision in scripture. Nevertheless, the tenth chapter of the book of Acts reveals that Peter was used by God to minister to a man named Cornelius and to this man's family and close friends. Cornelius was a Gentile; he was a centurion in the Italian military. It's quite obvious that Peter, who was sent to do Christian ministry among the Jews, was not only uneasy in his dealings with Cornelius and the family and friends of Cornelius; he was literally astonished.
Acts 10:25-29 is the account of what took place during the meeting of a believer of the natural branches of Israel and a group of Gentiles. It reads, "And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together. And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean. Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for."
Further down in this same passage after Peter has preached the gospel to them, we go on to read, "While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision (Israel) which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost" (Acts 10:44-45).
God's use of the apostle Peter for Christian ministry did not change his calling to minister to Israel. However, the fact that he was sent to Israel did not hinder this one time he was sent to minister to Gentiles. Learning to be flexible in Christian ministry is a must for the believer who will be used by God whenever, wherever, and for whatever purpose the Lord wills to use him or her with whomever, whether they be Jew or Gentile.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
