The Christian Bible on What It Means to Be a Fool
God's Word Is a Spiritual Mirror
The scripture of James 1:23-25 reads, "For if any be a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding (looking at) his natural face in a glass. For he beholdeth himself and goeth his way, and straightway (right away) forgetteth what manner of man he was (what he looks like). But, whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty (God's word) and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed."
The basic message of the above scripture is that God's word (the Bible) should be like a mirror into which a person looks to see if his or her appearance is okay. If flaws are seen in a mirror, they can be fixed before going out in public. The spiritual mirror of God's word gives man to know what he looks like spiritually. He might not consider himself a fool, but does God's word consider him a fool? What does it mean to be a fool in God's eyes or "opinion?"
It's important to remember that to behave foolishly and to be a fool are two different things. There probably isn't anyone who can truthfully say that he or she hasn't behaved foolishly at some point in life. Having behaved foolishly, however, does not make one a fool. We know this because of scriptural passages such as Galatians 3:1-3 in which the apostle Paul referred to the behavior of the Galatian believers as "foolish." Nevertheless, he never once called them fools. No true follower of Christ is a fool; however, even true believers can sometimes behave foolishly as is evident in this and other passages of the Bible.
Scriptural Definition of a Fool
So, what are the things that determine when someone is a fool, according to the Christian Bible? The scripture of Proverbs 1:7 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." We are reminded that even the world has to agree with this because it has a saying that goes something like, "To not know is bad; to not want to know is worse." Simply put, to despise wisdom and instruction is to be a fool.
Proverbs 14:16 teaches, "A wise man feareth and departeth from evil, but a fool rageth and is confident." Often real-life examples help to comprehend spiritual truths. During the formation of a ghost hunting and real exorcism group, biblical scripture that issues sharp warning against participation in such activity was shared with everyone involved. Not one member could refute the Bible on this important topic.
One of the members of the group did not want to receive God's warning, however, and responded with anger against the wisdom of God. He also remained confident in his decision to proceed with the practice of
ghost hunting and real exorcism despite the danger of which the scriptures speak. This is willful refusal to depart from evil and it is placing confidence in oneself above confidence in God's word. This amounts to being a fool.
The Atheist Is a Fool According to Biblical Scripture
Psalm 14:1 says, "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God." Some people consider it rude and disrespectful to refer to an atheist as a fool. Those same people must also then say that God's word is rude. But, what did the Lord tell his people when it comes to speaking the harsh truth? He told them to, "Cry aloud, SPARE NOT, lift up thy voice like a trumpet and show my people their transgression and Jacob their sins" (Isaiah 58:1).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
