Signs of Demonic Possession
Demonic Possession in the Country of the Gadarenes
Most of the passages of the word of God teach several natural and spiritual truths at the same time. When reading a passage for the first time, it's unlikely to extract every teaching and revelation available. However, as believers continue Bible study and begin rereading scripture, more and more is learned and realized.
The passage of Mark 5:1-8, which speaks of what appeared to be a crazy man who suffered possession by an unclean spirit, in other words, demonic possession, is one of many that speak of Jesus' power over the powers of darkness. Unfortunately, this tends to be the only truth that most people gain from this passage and others like it. But, there's so much more to be learned. God's word goes into great detail about many things for specific reasons. Teaching more than one thing at a time is one of those reasons.
What else besides the power of Jesus to deliver someone from demonic possession is revealed in biblical scripture such as Mark 5:1-8? The passage reads, "And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit who had his dwelling among the tombs. And no man could bind him, no, not with chains, because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces. Neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshiped him and cried with a loud voice and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not. For he (Jesus) said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit."
Signs of Demonic Possession According to the Word of god
What was the behavior of the man of the Gadarenes? How did he appear to other people around him? Scripture plainly reveals that he suffered from insanity because he was always in the mountains and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones. People who have a healthy mind do not behave in such a manner. It's made known that this man of the Gadarenes did things to injure himself physically because scripture says that he cut himself with stones. There are people today who injure themselves by cutting their wrists and many of them practice self mutilation. This crazy man of the Gadarenes also possessed supernatural strength. The passage reveals that he could
not be bound even with chains because he had the strength to break them. There are people today, many of whom have been diagnosed with insanity and who live in padded cells, who have amazing strength for which there is no natural explanation.
It is clear that insanity, unexplained supernatural strength, the act of injuring oneself, the practice of self mutilation and wild behavior figure among the signs of demonic possession. This does not mean that everyone who exhibits these signs are possessed with an unclean spirit. It does mean, however, that suspicion of such a spiritual condition should be raised when these things are seen. Sadly, this is not the case with modern mental health care workers, almost all of whom refuse to acknowledge the reality of spiritual sickness manifested as physical or mental illness due to demonic possession. What will not be confessed cannot be corrected.
