The Mind of Christ
The scripture of 1 Corinthians 2:16 reads, "For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But, we have the mind of Christ." Readers of this scripture might understandably ask how the Christian believer can have the mind of Christ and still not know the mind of the Lord. Others will read the passage and simply chalk it up to be another one of the numerous biblical passages that appear to contradict other biblical passages.
Effective Bible Study Requires Attention to Detail
If we read 1 Corinthians 2:16 paying attention to every word of the scripture we'll see the answer to our question even without consulting a commentary or other scripture. "For who hath known the mind of the Lord" is not the complete question. The rest of the question that the apostle Paul writes is, "...That he may instruct him?" "He" refers to every individual believer. Paul is saying that though we (believers) have the mind of Christ, no one knows the mind of the Lord in a way that he or she may INSTRUCT God. Here is the key point of the message.
In verse fourteen of the same chapter, Paul explains that having the mind of Christ allows believers to receive the things of God that, without such a mind, would be foolishness to him (1 Corinthians 2:11). That, however, is the purpose and extent of having the mind of Christ. It's important to remember that having the mind of Christ in order to receive the things of God does not equate to knowing the mind of the Lord to be able to instruct him. This is why Paul also taught, "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counseller? Or who hath first given to him and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen" (Romans 11:33-36).
