The Power of Intercessory Prayer - Part I
Why Pray Intercessory Prayer?
The first question that probably should be answered is, "What exactly is intercessory prayer?" Some people have been taught that it is a special gift from God given to select believers to have the power of intercessory prayer to receive an immediate answer and/or solution from God for a specific problem. While that certainly is not an incorrect definition, it is not complete, according to scripture of the Holy Bible.
Intercession is defined as: mediation and/or prayer or petition in favor of another (The Merriam-Webster Dictionary). To pray intercessory prayer is to go to God on behalf of an individual or group of individuals. Abraham pleaded or interceded for the perverse cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:17-33). Those cities were still destroyed by the Lord, so does the power of intercessory prayer truly exist? Yes, it does. The 33rd verse of Genesis 18 reveals that God would have spared the cities if only ten righteous people could have been found in them. This reveals how much God does not want to destroy his creatures, even when they are wicked--but he will. To pray intercessory prayer is not to attempt to somehow evade the demands of the holiness of God; it is to fervently ask the Lord to intervene to change what cannot be fixed without his intervention and to appeal to his great mercy.
God's Anger Satisfied Through the Power of Intercessory Prayer
When Job was in the midst of suffering a great trial of his faith, his friends: Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar came to be with him. However, their presence at times only intensified his tribulation instead of helping in the midst of it. The Lord was so displeased with their words during their visits with Job that he told Eliphaz, who appeared to take the lead of the three, "...My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath. Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering: and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job" (Job 42:7-8). We read in the same chapter that the friends of Job did as they were told and Job prayed for them as he was so told that God would not deal with them according to their sin. Those friends were spared because of the power of intercessory prayer that God told Job to make for them to avert his dealing with them after their folly. Job was also blessed, not only for his trust in the Lord during the fiery trial of faith, but also for his obedience to pray intercessory prayer as he was commanded (Job 42:10).
