Effective Christian Singles Ministry
A Definition of True Christian Singles Ministry
A ministry should minister to the needs of the people to whom it's directed. A ministry to single Christians, therefore, should address the needs of Christian bachelors and of single ladies who are genuine followers of Jesus. The sad truth is that most churches do not even have a Christian singles ministry, and those that do, very rarely respond to the problems and needs of the unmarried servants of God. Why do so many churches lack a ministry to singles in the first place? Why do the ministries that do exist tend to fail at meeting the needs?
Overlooked or Avoided?
Christian singles ministry is sometimes simply overlooked by married believers who have no idea how difficult it is nowadays to find a Christian wife or husband. However, ministry to single Christians generally is avoided very much on purpose. There are various reasons for this. Among them are attitudes that single Christians don't deserve the attention that married ones do. Sometimes there's a strong desire to avoid what is often erroneously thought of as "matchmaking." Also, there are married believers who, for various reasons that usually are not good, want single Christians to remain single all of their life.
Signs of Ineffective Ministry
Again, the very few churches that bother to have a Christian singles ministry at all, rarely address the real needs of unmarried believers. This is especially true when it comes to single believers who are mature in age and have been praying and waiting for years to find a godly spouse. What tends to make these ministries so ineffective?
The fact is that almost all of them focus on only one aspect of the problem of Christian singleness: living with it. Ministry to the unsaved doesn't focus on teaching them how to live without fellowship with the Lord; it seeks to bring them into communion with God. Why should a Christian singles ministry deal only with living the single life? Christian bachelors, as well as the ladies, are encouraged, often by the married, to see how their singleness is an advantage in their service to the Lord. Is it not realized that the constant desire to find a Christian wife or husband also interferes with their service to God?
Christian singles ministry also tends to stress the need to abstain from relations outside of marriage, which is in perfect agreement with biblical scripture. However, this reminder tends to come quickly from married believers, many of whom would fall into sin within days of being found single themselves. This ugly truth has been observed repeatedly within the church.
What are the OTHER needs of single believers hoping to find a Christian wife or husband? The answer to that question should be obvious: Christian dates! As dating precedes marriage, it is only logical that a major need for Christian bachelors and of saved ladies is to have Christian dates.
