Why Did Jesus Have to Die?
Why did Jesus have to die? If you have this question even after having attended Bible studies or studied on your own, you're not the only one. And, it is good to seek answers rather than to show no interest in understanding the glorious gospel of the Lord Jesus.
Shedding of Blood for Remission of Sins
The scripture of Hebrews 9:22 says, "...Without shedding of blood is no remission." Understandably, many people cannot understand why Christ could not have simply come to earth and suffered some injury that would have caused him to bleed. Would not his shed blood from an injury have been sufficient for the remission of sins? Why did Jesus have to die?
The shed blood of Christ, and the cross (crucifixion of Christ), accomplishes different things in the life of the believer. To keep things very simple in this article, let us just mentally file away that the shed blood of the Savior was for the remission of sins. The cross of Christ, however, is what crucifies the old man, also known as the sinful nature, inherited from the fall of Adam and Eve in Eden.
The apostle Paul taught, "Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed (killed), that henceforth, we should not serve (live in) sin" (Romans 6:6). We can receive remission of sins, but we should understand that the old man (the sin nature) cannot be fixed. That old nature is such a mess that it has to be killed by crucifixion so that it does not interfere with the new creature that we become in Jesus.
Again, why did Jesus have to die, if we still have to battle against the sin nature even after we have received him as Savior? What did Paul say? He taught, "...In Christ Jesus our Lord, I DIE DAILY" (1 Cor. 15:30). The apostle, so greatly used by the Lord, had to die every day to his old man. Sadly, far too few Christians who are "babes in Christ" are ever taught the importance of daily submission and yielding to the Holy Spirit in order to grow in Christ. This can be an extremely difficult growth, not because you're trying to do the work yourself instead of letting Jesus do it, but because you must yield to the Holy Spirit.
Death Required for the Testator
Why did Jesus have to die? Another reason for the death of Christ is clearly given in the scripture of Hebrews 9:15-17. This passage presents things on somewhat legal terms. A will is a testament to be enforced after the death of the testator. As long as the testator lives, it is not put into effect. The same is taking place in the spirit realm when we speak of the Old TESTAMENT passing away so that the New TESTAMENT could take its place. Who is the testator of the New Testament? It is Jesus.
In Hebrews 9:16-17 we read, "And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force AFTER men are dead. Otherwise, it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth."
There are other answers that the word of God provides to the question: Why did Jesus have to die. However, it usually is not a good idea to overwhelm new believers in Jesus or those who have had this question for years and are just now getting answers.
