What Are the Symptoms of Mountain Sickness?

starLife.gif

Acute mountain sickness affects many people who live in regions that are at sea level, and those who ascend to a moderate altitude (2,400 meters) over a period of one to two days. This causes a shortness of breath, which raises the heart beat and causes victimes to tire easily. Around twenty percent of these people experience a headache, nausea or vomiting, and insomnia. The symptoms of mountain sickness are worsened by strenuous physical exercise. Most people recupe within a few days. This benign disorder, which is nothing more than an unpleasant sensation, is more common among young people than it is in the older population.

Mountain sickness, (altitude sickness) is a disorder caused by a lack of oxygen at high altitudes. It takes on various forms, first a dominant one and afterward another form. As the altitude gets higher, atmospheric pressure lowers, and the less dense air contains less oxygen. This lowering of the quantity of oxygen affects the body in various ways: a rise in the rate and depth of respiration, alteration of the equilibrium in the exchange of gases between the lungs and the blood, an increase in the alkalinity of the bood, and a distortion in the distribution of salts such as potassium and sodium inside the cells. As a result, water is distributed differently between the blood and the tissues. These changes are the principle cause for the symptoms of mountian sickness. At high altitudes, the blood contains less oxygen, which produces a bluish color of the skin, lips and nails (cyanosis). Within a few weeks, the body responds by making more red blood cells in order to supply more oxygen to the tissues.

The symptoms of mountain sickness and other effects of altitude depend on the altitude and the speed of ascension. The effects are milder at an altitude less than 2,200 meters, but are more pronounced and frequent above 2,800 meters after a rapid ascension. Most people adapt in a mtter of a few days at heights up to 3,000 meters, but adapting to much higher altitudes takes days or even months.

Preventing the Symptoms of Mountain Sickness

The best way to avoid symptoms of mountain sickness is to ascend slowly, taking two days to reach 2,500 meters and an additional day for every 350 to 700 meters. Climbing at a rate that is comfortable for everyone is better than following a strict, preestablished plan. Spending the night at the half way mark of the trip also helps to reduce the risks. Being in good physical health can help, but it does not guarantee well being at high altitudes.

It is a good idea to avoid strenuous physical activity for a day or two after reaching your destination. Drinking additional liquids and avoiding salt and salty foods can also help greatly, though these measures have not been proven effective. Caution should be taken if you drink alcohol at high altitudes. One alcoholic drink consumed at high altitudes appears to have the effect of two that are consumed at sea level. What is more is that the symptoms that ingestion of large quantities of alcohol produce are similar to some forms of mountain sickness.

Treatment of the Symptoms of Mountain Sickness

Mild acute mountain sickness usually goes away in one or two days without treatment other than the ingestion of large quantities of liquids to replace what was lost through sweating and breathing dry air.
