Mayan and Other End of World Predictions: Why They Cannot Be Trusted

earth.jpg

Mayan end of world predictions say that life on planet Earth, as we know it, will come to an end on December 21, 2012. Others state that a universal new age of enlightenment will be ushered in. Should we heed the Mayan warnings? Should we rejoice over a new age of consciousness?

The Source of Mayan End of World Predictions

Information from unreliable sources is justifiably considered unreliable. The fate of Earth is dealt with by various spiritual writings, including the Bible. Before we compare Mayan prophecy with biblical prophecy concerning the end of the world, we must determine reliability for each.

The word of God foretold international events with astonishing accuracy of details. Among those events are the fall of the great Babylonian empire, which is now present-day Iraq, and the formation of the modern state of Israel. Biblical scripture described what Babylon would look like after its fall: swamps, barren land, desert, a land where the jackal would roam, eerie tales of mysterious activity, etc. The part of modern Iraq that lies within the territory of ancient Babylon perfectly fits that description! Mayan end of world predictions remain vague, obscure, and as ambiguous as the "prophecies" of Nostradamus.

The formation of the modern state of Israel took place in 1948 in the midst of a hostile and infuriated conglomerate of allied Arab nations who vowed to annihilate the Jews before they would allow their presence in the Middle East. The events of that practically unbelievable war like no other in history were recorded in most major newspapers around the world.

It's interesting to point out that some have compared the biblical scriptures that foretold the war with the newspaper article accounts. They remark that it appears as though one source is based on the other. Which came first? Obviously, the biblical prophecy was the source for what truly took place thousands of years later! Can such amazing truths be linked with Mayan end of world predictions or any of their predictions? The exact scriptures that foretold these, and other events, are given in the section on the amazing facts of the Bible on our statement of faith page (see link below).

In light of these fulfilled prophecies, is it not logical to consider the Bible as a most reliable source of information? Yes, it is. What is the source of the Mayan end of world predictions? Well, it certainly is not the Spirit of God who inspired the holy scriptures, because He does not contradict Himself.

The Mayans provided a specific date for the end of the world. But, the word of God does no such thing. The scriptures tell us, "Heaven and earth shall pass away...but of that day and hour knoweth NO man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father ONLY" (Matthew 24:35-36). Obviously, the Father then is not the author of the Mayan end of world predictions.

The Mayan civilization received their prophecies from spirits of divination. We know that they were not followers of the living God, because they practiced things that the Lord called abominations, evil, unclean, impure, and unrighteous. How do we know this? Archaeologists have uncovered the relics, drawings, writings, and artifacts that plainly tell us how the Mayans lived, what they believe in, the things they practiced, etc.

An Ungodly Source of Wisdom

Deuteronomy 18:10 reveals what the Lord said to His people, "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times (astrology, crystal ball gazing, etc.), or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits (a demonic guide), or a wizard, or a necromancer (someone who talks to the dead). For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD...."

The archaeological Mayan findings teach us that the these people sacrificed animals and people, including their sons and daughters. They drank blood, drugged themselves in the practice of demonic rituals, worshiped many different gods, consulted the stars, practiced magic and wizardry, talked to the dead, and practiced the casting of spells etc.

This true statement is not meant to demean or defame a people. They had not yet heard the gospel of Jesus, so they were no different from any other people who do not know the Lord as Savior. We see the same evil practices throughout all of the world in the history of every nation, because every individual and nation has gone astray as a result of the fall from grace of Adam and Eve (Isaiah 53:6).

The fact remains, nevertheless, that the people who gave us Mayan end of world predictions did not have the wisdom of God, the Creator of this world. Sadly, they did not know him. Therefore, neither their writings, nor their conclusions from gazing into the stars are a reliable source.
